All of us like to live peacefully. But quarrels do occur. In most such cases, each
party blames the other. This gives rise to disputes. Courts settle such disputes. In
the cases of theft, robberies or murders, the police arrest persons who they believe
are culprits. But they cannot be punished merely because the police have arrested
them. It has to be proven in a court of law that the arrested persons are really
the offenders and that the offender has committed the crime. Then only it punishes
him.
The cases tried in our courts are mainly of two kinds. Cases of theft, robbery,
physical injury or murder are called criminal cases. Cases that concern property
contracts, damage to goods in transit by railway etc are called civil cases.
