A helping hand for the elderly poo

Jamuni Masomat, a 65-year-old widow living in Dhawaiya village, in Gurhet panchayat, Hazaribag district, Jharkhand, had to struggle to pay back loans taken by her late husband for the marriage of her four daughters. She worked as an agricultural labourer and made barely enough money to feed herself and her son. In 2004, her son migrated in search of a job. The money he sent home from his salary as a watchman soon stopped coming and Jamuni Masomat was left to cope on her own. In January 2006, Jamuni’s case was brought to the attention of the vridha sangh that had been formed in Gurhet panchayat under the guidance of a PACS Programme partner, HelpAge India.
